Searching for Roots: Where to Begin

The following article was wtitten for the National Yarbrough Genealogical and Historical Association. It applies to all who want to discover their heritage.

Searching for Roots: Where to Begin
Where does the newly interested family researcher begin? There is no one good answer to the question, but there is one important step that is needed before actual research commences. That is to list as much factual data about the family as is known: names of the father and mother, grandparents’ names, and… Continue

Hi Jim,
First of all, you are an awesome person for giving your time to all of us, searching for our heritage. You're a wonderful source of information.
I would like to know how I go about proving my Indian heritage through my male cousins that have had the DNA tests. Can I prove it through their results and birth/death certificates of my immediate family members?
Thank you,
Deneice

Dear Jim, Thanks so much for writing! I sincerely appreciate the information you sent me on George W. Parker. What I have seen, and where my hope lies, is that Cynthia Ann Parker's Uncle Benjamin (married to Susanah Robertson, had a son by the name of George W. Parker. I am in contact with MSTV01 through Ancestry.com and she has been very helpful. But she too, does not have any parentage for our George W. Parker. Since my grandmother Nell White always told her family Cynthia Ann was a great great aunt, this would be the perfect match!! I am trying to be accurate and I don't add people without some sort of documentation or corroborating evidence. If I could find out who Benjamin & Susanah's George was married to, that would solve it for me. Again, thanks so much for your reply! You supplied some great information and I do appreciate you taking the time. If you come across anything, please remember me. Have a great day! Cheri

Guess my point in this line of thinking was that as family story has it when Mary T. and her husband John Brown moved from Texas to Missouri they had and escort of Comanche Warriors who followed them and their first three children on their journey. When their mom Mary talked to one of the Comanche warriors the children got scaree and started crying and Mary T. told them oh honey don't worry that one is my mothers brother. I was wondering if Cynthia Ann's brother John could have had any children before he was ransomed back or if any of the other Parker men would have married into the same Comanche tribe. Thanks Malee

Thanks so much for your quick response Jim I appreciate it. We have a relative that says Richard Jeffery Parker is Mary T. Parker's dad but on the 1850 census in Lafayett in Macon County Tx. they say that she is on a census living with her two older siblings in a household of people who are not their parents. and Richard is in the same town and county with his wife Alley and their children down to seven years old. I am not convinced that Richard and Alley are her parents because why would you live in the same town and county and have other people raising your 5, 3, and 2 year old???? Well back to the investigation. Thanks Malee

Hey Jim I am Back on the trail of my Parker heritage and still have questions that don't make sence with the info I have. Mary T. Parker is my great great grandma and she married John P. Brown. When Cynthia Ann was taken was there a brother of hers that was taken also? Does anyone have info on whether he had taken an indian wife before they were discovered? I guess I a going on the idea that Quannah's dad had a sister and I am looking for any info there might be.

the picture that i have of Elbert and Minnie Parker shows that he was not white but in fact native. And the Name Rosella as a child I think is off my grandmothers name was Lida Rosella Parker she did have an older sister who died. And three younger brothers Pete, David, Jessie. From what I could find Minnie lived on the Kiowa reservation before she married Elbert.

Thank you so very much for your reply and for some concrete information. I am thrilled to have connected with someone, well, family, interested in the exact same line I am exploring. I would love for you to pass my intest along to others, my email is jmlrouse@comcast.net. I am amazed and pleased to hear there is this DNA project, I'll try to explore the site to find out more. I am having good luck locating graves for my Parker and Faulkenberry Kin..fortunately I am in Texas for the next several months and plan to haul the entire family to Anderson/Limestone county to see things ourselves. THanks again for your help, I look forward to the discoveries that lie ahead.
