Preservation and Celebration of the Parker Family History & Genealogy

I have been told by my family that I am a decendent of Quanah Parker on my father's side. My fathers name is Bobby Neal Smith. He is deceased now but was born on Nov 25th 1930 i believe. His Father's name is Herbert W Smith who was born in 1911. Herbert was married to Mary Etta Pilcher who I believe died very early after having my Father. Mary Etta was said to be one of Quanah's children. Can you point me in the right direction to see if this is correct. Marry Etta's last name may have been speled Pilsher. They lived around Deleon, TX when my Father was born I believe.

Hello, Gregory Neal Smith - Since it is said that nothing is certain but death and taxes, then possibly the material I suggested to you may not be 'for sure' your people.  :)  However, all of the people I mentioned lived in the times and places I mentioned. And they closely fit the descriptions you posted in your original request for help.  Which is why I sent the preview to you in the first place, to check the data out before doing any more.

If none of that fits your vision or family stories you believe to be factual, then those are not your people, they are just someone else's people, and that is okay, too.

If, however, you are interested in seeing the census reports and other vitals I gathered to write the preview, send me your email address and I will shoot it out to you.  It is too long to post here on Parker Heritage.  Again, you can respond at My Page Parker Heritage or by email at jandpparker@msn.com.

I have, by the way, been contacted by  descendants of the Thomas Jasper Pilcher family from Ouachita Parish, Louisiana.  They  offered to send copies of pictures of Thomas Jasper Pilcher and his family which I accepted with gratitude.    If you are interested in knowing more about them, I will be glad to give them your name and address and suggest that they contact you.

This is very confusing to me.  Are you saying that for sure my grandmother, Mary Etta Pilcher's father was Curtis Levi Pilcher?  Where would I find documentation for this do you know?  And how do I know for sure that Its the same Herbert Smith?  The problem with all of this is that my now deceased Father cut ties with that side of the family back in the 70's.  Of course now everyone that knew anything is deceased and Im trying to obtain information in the dark so to speak.

Hello, Gregory Neal Smith:

I do not research Quanah.  My interest is in people from Louisiana like your Thomas Jasper Pilcher who came from Ouachita Parish, Louisiana.  His son was Curtis Levi Pilcher who was the father of Mary Etta Pilcher who married your Herbert Smith.  Curtis Levi Pilcher married Ella Parker, and she was the mother of Mary Etta Pilcher.  If you are looking for an ancestor Native blood, Ella Parker Pilcher might be a good candidate.

Ella Parker was born in Texas.  Her birthdates are recorded variously as 1878, 1888, or 1889.  Based on the range of those birthdates, it is unlikely that Ella was a child of Quanah as he had settled with his tribe on the reservation at Fort Sill, Oklahoma by 1875.    If Ella was born in 1878, a marriage prior to her union with Curtis Levi Pilcher ca. 1906-1909 would have been possible, and Parker would have been a married name, not a maiden name.  Otherwise, nothing I saw on censuses specifically identified her prior to 1910., including a marriage record to Pilcher.  It may be found that she lived in Kaufman or Van Zandt Counties, Texas prior to marrying Curtis Pilcher, and thus answer some questions about her earlier life.  Numerous Ella Parkers were found on the Kaufman 1910 census who shared her general characteristics of age, etc.

Curtis Pilcher and Ella Parker Pilcher divorced in Comanche Co., Texas ca. 1935.  He worked there for the railroad.  He married a second time and, I believe, had more children.  A Curtis Levi Pilcher Jr. is found on later censuses.  Curtis Pilcher Sr.  died 1955.  Ella Pilcher died 1965.

Perhaps someone researching Quanah who has a list of his many descendants can help you with Ella Parker.

Anything you would care to share in your family history about Thomas Jasper Pilcher and his family in Ouachita Parish before 1850  will also be appreciated.  Reach me at My Page here on Parker Heritage or by email at jandpparker@msn.com

Good luck in your research.
